A young hunter in the shop last fall told me he had shot his first deer that season, then corrected himself halfway through the sentence and said moose instead. His buddy laughed at him. I told him he had actually been right the first time. A moose is a deer, and so are elk and […]
My buddy flew out to Campbell River two summers ago with a BC anglers licence on his phone and a plan to fish a river in the morning and the ocean in the afternoon. He spent the first evening smug about how organized he was. The next afternoon, a fisheries officer at the marina asked […]
The coldest I have ever been in a treestand was not in December. It was the second week of November, four degrees, a light drizzle, and a northwest wind coming across a cut cornfield near Stayner. I had on a pair of insulated pants that cost me a lot of money, and I was freezing […]
My brother-in-law moved from Sudbury to Kamloops four years ago, and his first BC hunting season taught him a lesson the hard way. He had hunted moose in Ontario for twenty years through the draw system, so he assumed BC worked the same way. He waited for an application window, missed the fact that half […]
A customer from Moncton called us last September trying to sort out what he could actually hunt, and he had four browser tabs open giving him four different answers. One site told him archery opened September 15. Another said October 6. A third had firearms closing October 31, and the fourth ran it into December. […]
Every deer camp I have ever hunted argues about weight, and almost nobody in the argument is talking about the same number. My uncle swears he shot a 250-pound buck in 1998. My cousin, who helped drag it, says it was 190. Both of them are right. My uncle means live weight, guessed from the […]
My father-in-law has shot more deer than anyone I know, and he has never owned a stitch of camo in his life. He hunts in the same faded wool coat he bought in the eighties, blaze orange vest over top, jeans he has worn to work all week. I spent my first few seasons quietly […]
A woman came into the shop in August asking what she needed to take her son duck hunting, and she already had the hard part done. She had passed the hunter education course, she had her Outdoors Card, and she had bought a small game licence that spring. She figured she was set. I had […]
