Choosing a Shotgun Action

Most of the decision comes down to the action. Here’s what actually separates them — this applies to any brand, not just Canuck.

Pump Action

You cycle the action yourself by working the forend. Because nothing depends on the shell to operate the gun, a pump will feed almost anything you put in it — light target loads, heavy field loads, low-recoil shells, all the same.

Choose a pump if: it’s your first shotgun, you want the simplest possible mechanism, you shoot a wide mix of ammunition, or you’re working to a tight budget. This is the safe default recommendation for most new shooters. Our pump action shotgun guide goes into more detail.

Trade-off: slower follow-up shots, and you have to consciously cycle the gun — which takes practice under pressure.

Semi-Automatic

The gun cycles itself using energy from the fired shell. Follow-up shots are faster, and felt recoil is noticeably softer because the action absorbs some of it. That matters on a high-volume day in a duck blind.

Choose a semi-auto if: you shoot a lot in one sitting, you’re recoil-sensitive, or you want fast follow-ups on waterfowl and upland birds.

Trade-off: more moving parts, so more cleaning. Semi-autos are also fussier about ammunition — very light target loads may not generate enough energy to cycle reliably. Try a few different loads and find what your gun likes. It’s normal for a new semi-auto to settle in over the first few outings on standard full-power loads.

Over-Under

Two barrels, break-open, no magazine. The classic clay target and upland bird configuration. You get two chokes available instantly, excellent balance, and you can see at a glance that the gun is empty.

Choose an over-under if: you shoot trap, skeet or sporting clays, or you walk upland fields where a light, well-balanced gun matters over a long day.

Trade-off: two shells only, and price per gun is generally higher for comparable quality.

Bullpup

The action sits behind the trigger group, which packs a full-length barrel into a much shorter overall firearm. The appeal is a compact package that’s easy to store and transport without giving up barrel length.

Matching the Gun to What You Shoot

• Waterfowl — a 12-gauge semi-auto. Soft recoil over a long day, fast follow-ups on fast birds. Check that your chosen model handles the steel shot loads required under Canadian migratory bird regulations.
• Upland birds — a lighter over-under or semi-auto. You’re carrying it all day, so weight and balance matter more than capacity.

• Clay targets — an over-under, ideally with interchangeable chokes.
• First shotgun — a 12-gauge pump. Simple, forgiving, affordable, and it’ll teach you good habits.

Before You Buy: Classification, Storage and Care

Classification. Firearm classifications in Canada can and do change. Confirm the current classification of the specific model you’re buying — with us or with the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program — before you purchase, and make sure your PAL covers it.
