BPS stands for Browning Pump Shotgun. But after more than 50 years of reliable performance, maybe it should mean Best Pump Shotgun.

Browning built the BPS to meet the needs of hunters that prefer a pump-action shotgun and won’t compromise on durability. These guns were built like no other with a rugged, precision machined steel receiver that is meant to last. The proven pump-action design is sound and reliable. A pair of rigid, heat-treated steel action bars resist twisting and binding to ensure fast, reliable operation. The result is smooth operation in all conditions and the ability to stay on target while delivering rapid follow-up shots. A convenient serrated slide release is located at the rear of the trigger guard. Other big features include the bottom ejection that throws empty hulls down and out of your line of sight. This, plus the easy-to-reach top-tang safety switch, make the BPS truly ambidextrous.

Browning’s entry into the pump market dates back to 1977, when the BPS was introduced. From the start, the BPS was positioned at the higher end of its segment. Even by the standards of its time, when guns were better fit-and-finished than they are now, the BPS stood out from the competition for the quality of its workmanship. It had cut checkering where the 870 Wingmaster had a machine-pressed design, and it had a milled steel receiver in contrast to the alloy receivers of the Mossberg 500 and others. It still stands out from the competition today.
